The Beginning

Writing the first post on a new blog is like the first day of school. How do you just jump right in? How much should you share up front? Will it be awesome, or a total fail?
Over the last several months that I have been developing this site, I've worked on getting many posts into my drafts. I have a lot of ideas that I had to get out of my head and onto the computer, and I'm excited to share those with you all soon. But this post. The first post. This is the one where I just stare at the empty screen. Where are you supposed to begin?!
Many of you know that I am not new to blogging. I have been blogging at another site for 5 years. It has treated me well, and been a great outlet for me to write and keep memories...two things which are dear to my heart. Somewhere along the way, I decided I wanted to start over from scratch. A clean slate. My old blog, which I'll probably still update privately, for my family's sake, was as I mentioned, mostly for memory keeping/life sharing. I talked a lot about my kids. Everything from sharing cute pictures to what they ate! I made many dear friends over the years of writing there, and I'm so grateful that I spent the time I did to write what I did. I love looking back at the years and seeing what things our family was going through. I love having detailed 'diaries' of my kid's baby and toddler hoods. All of that is fine and well, but it was time to move on.
I have always been a writer, for as long as I can remember. I remember being 3 or 4 years old and "writing" in my journals. I always had a pen and paper with me. In school, I'd rather write 100 essays, book reports, or papers than take a test. I had a knack for it. The words just flow for me. In high school, I began writing for my school's newspaper and became the Editor-in-chief my senior year. I decided to pursue a major in journalism. The summer before I started college, I changed my mind on that, for many reasons, but that didn't change my love for writing. So here I am. Ready to start a new outlet. And I'm excited! As a mom of young children, I've struggled the last few years to find something that I enjoy. The first few years of being a mother, I felt like everything I did had to center around them. And for the most part, it does...after all they are the most important things in my life (after Jesus & my husband, of course!) But I've found that I need something that I can do for myself. That I am passionate about. And I really think blogging is it. I love {almost} every part of it. I love that it gives me a creative outlet, but I still feel like I'm relaxing when I'm doing it. It lets me step outside of laundry and dishes and diapers for a little bit to pursue a "hobby", while still being at home.
So, what can you expect to see here at SBHH? First and most importantly, I want this to be a place that glorifies the Lord. He is the center of my life, and I want to reflect that here. I also plan to write about marriage, parenting, homemaking, DIY projects, homeschooling and more. There will be a little bit of everything and I really want this to be a place that encourages and inspires the people who come here to read.
Whew! Ok, so maybe that wasn't as scary as the first day of school, but I'm glad to have the dreaded first post out of the way!

  3. Yes indeed Natalie Elise--you have always loved everything about writing. I recall shopping with you as a child and while most children would be looking at toys or candy when given the "go for it" choice you went for the notebooks and something to write in them with! I believe your favorite day of the year was Back-To-School shopping day, the day you got to shop until your heart was content for writing tools for the year! Well done in using your talents but also for using your heart in this new en devour. Love ya, Mamma
